How to look after your hairdressing chairs | Picture guide

Do you want your chairs to look new for longer, feel clean for every client – and avoid stiff padding? Let’s find a simple routine that works in a busy day-to-day. Most “leather chairs” in salons are actually vegan leather, also known as imitation leather. It’s tough, repels dirt, and keeps looking good – especially if you care for it properly.

What actually ends up on your chairs over the course of a day?

Shampoo, hairspray, skin cream, colour residue, coffee, sweat, and ordinary dust. Over time, it settles into a film that makes the surface dry. That’s exactly why it makes sense to have a care product that both cleans gently and adds elasticity, so the material doesn’t dry out and crack. If you don’t want to read the whole article, you can buy a care set right here.

A realistic routine

Picture closing time. You shake the bottle, spray one to two sprays onto the cloth (not directly onto the chair), and wipe down the seat, armrests, and backrest in calm movements. Finally, give it a quick buff with the smooth side of the cloth, and the chair looks fresh and even, without a film. It takes two to three minutes per chair, and the next morning you’re met with shiny surfaces and a subtle, clean scent.

Why Carisma from Greiner?

Because Carisma Cleaning & Care Lotion is developed specifically for professional imitation leather on hairdressing chairs. The lotion is ready to use, cleans without solvents, removes dirt gently, and prevents drying out, so the surface keeps its suppleness. You get the set with a high-pile, reusable microfibre cloth that makes cleaning easy – and yes, it’s thoroughly tested in real use. Are there alternatives? Yes. Would I recommend them to a hairdresser? No.

What do you do when something goes wrong?

If colour, coffee, or something else gets on the upholstery, grab the cloth straight away. Quick wiping makes all the difference. With colour, you should of course remove as much as possible with, for example, kitchen roll or toilet paper. Then go over it with the set from Greiner, if possible while the customer is still there. And remember the good habit during colour treatments: a good cover that protects the chair saves you a lot of work and possibly having to buy new chairs.

“Can’t I just use water and a bit of alcohol?”

Water takes the top layer of dust, but not product film and grease. Alcohol and harsh all-purpose cleaners can dry out the material and wear away the top coat of the upholstery. The result is a vulnerable surface that ages too early. If you ran a salon during the corona crisis, when you had to wipe down with alcohol after every customer, this won’t come as a surprise.

A little extra care

Give seams, joins, and armrests a little extra care now and then – this is where residue collects. Also look at the base: a damp cloth over the cross base and pump keeps metal and chrome looking good. Avoid flooding it with water; wipe dry afterwards so you don’t get water marks.

A few reminders

Always test a new product in an out-of-the-way spot if the surface is very delicate. Think about the age of your furniture: if it is 12 years old now, and it was 15 years old when you bought it, the surface may react negatively to harsh products such as alcohol. Always avoid contact with eyes and heated surfaces, and don’t let the product dry in before you have wiped it off. Store it out of reach of children.

In short

If, every day at closing time, you spray Carisma onto the cloth and wipe down the chair, the imitation leather stays glossy and elastic, and you come in to a clean work surface every morning. If stains happen, deal with them right away. Make it a habit, and you’ll extend the chair’s life, improve the first impression – and make it pleasant for both you and your customers.
